Consultation is a key part of some SNN processes. In some cases such as renaming a street local authorities must consult because of the legal requirements. In other cases local authorities may choose to consult under local governance, for example in preparing a list of proposed street names for future use or with other bodies about a proposal. There are also other forms of consultation which may be required that are detailed later in this section.
